Soul & Space: Where Modern Maximalism Finds Meaningful Expression

In Mumbai’s ever-evolving landscape of luxury residences, where minimalism often dominates the design dialogue, Soul & Space offers a compelling counterpoint one that embraces modern maximalism with restraint, clarity, and emotional depth. Designed by Ekkta Ahuja, this expansive 5,000 sq. ft. residence at RK Studios in Chembur unfolds as a thoughtfully layered home that prioritizes personal narrative over passing trends.

Conceived for a well-travelled, design-aware family, the project moves beyond surface-level luxury. Instead, it explores how spatial design can evoke memory, comfort, and identity. The residence, originally two adjacent 3.5 BHK apartments, has been seamlessly consolidated into a cohesive 5 BHK home an exercise that goes far beyond spatial amalgamation. Structural interventions, recalibrated layouts, and carefully considered sightlines allow natural light to permeate the interiors, establishing a sense of openness and continuity.

The arrival experience sets the tone. A meticulously crafted marble inlay in the entrance lobby functions almost like a contemporary floor tapestry an artistic prelude to the material richness that defines the home. This language continues into the living room, where expanses of white marble are softened with delicate inlay work, introducing rhythm without overwhelming the senses.

Here, a globally curated selection of furniture anchors the space. Sculptural pieces from Rugiano lend a structured sophistication, while Turkish carpets introduce warmth and tactility. The palette remains intentionally subdued, allowing materials stone, metal, wood, and glass to take centre stage. Layered lighting further enhances the ambience, shifting in response to the time of day and reinforcing the home’s immersive quality.

The dining area takes on a more dramatic tone. A statement dining table, again by Rugiano, pairs with couture-inspired chairs by Elie Saab, creating a setting that blurs the line between function and art. Floating agate shelves act as luminous backdrops, reinforcing the project’s overarching narrative of refined layering.

In the private quarters, the design becomes more introspective. The master suite is anchored by a striking green quartzite feature wall, balanced by a palette of taupe and tan that fosters calm. A concealed panel leads to a walk-in wardrobe, where glass, PU, and leather finishes coexist in quiet harmony. The adjoining bathroom continues this tactile exploration, with a sculptural marble basin lending a sense of crafted luxury.

The children’s rooms introduce a shift in tone playful, expressive, and deeply personal. The daughter’s room, developed in collaboration with Tejomaya Designs, features a whimsical narrative anchored by a fuchsia round bed and a custom mural. Soft ombré drapes filter sunlight into a gentle, dreamlike glow, while bespoke storage elements add a layer of individuality.

In contrast, the son’s room channels energy and imagination through a bold astronaut-themed mural and a tactile, honeycomb-tufted headboard. Designed with zoned efficiency, the space incorporates study, play, and display areas, alongside subtle interventions that encourage movement and activity.

A multi-functional room underscores the home’s adaptability. Designed as a flexible environment, it transitions effortlessly between a guest suite and a private lounge. A Murphy bed disappears into the wall, revealing a relaxed seating arrangement, while a concealed study desk allows the space to shift from work to leisure with ease.

Meanwhile, the parents’ bedroom adopts a quieter, more restrained approach. A palette of greys and whites, combined with fluted paneling and layered drapery, creates a serene retreat that feels both timeless and intimate.

What distinguishes Soul & Space is its refusal to conform. Rather than adhering to a singular style, the home evolves as a collection of moments each room expressing a distinct identity while contributing to a cohesive whole. It is a study in balance, where maximalism is not defined by excess, but by thoughtful curation and meaningful detail.
