The Architectural Evolution of Collective Housing in Aveiro

In the heart of Aveiro’s expanding urban fabric, a striking new residential project by Ar. Mário Alves stands as a bridge between the city’s architectural past and its contemporary ambitions. Designed to seamlessly integrate into a pre-existing collective housing program, the building is a testament to continuity and transformation.

Strategically positioned on a corner plot within a structured subdivision, the project responds to its context with a balance of cohesion and distinction. The adjacent building, designed by the same architect at an earlier stage, serves as a guiding reference, allowing this new intervention to engage in an architectural dialogue that respects the past while embracing the future.

Form, Function & Contextual Sensitivity

Rather than imposing an entirely new aesthetic, the building borrows and extends the horizontal language of its predecessor. The linear slatted façade, a defining element of the existing structure, is thoughtfully reinterpreted, creating a sense of continuity while adding a fresh dynamism to the skyline.

The volume itself undergoes a transformation as it rises. Initially adhering to the horizontal footprint of the urban block, the building gradually asserts a more vertical presence, punctuating the street corner with a striking architectural landmark. This verticality is accentuated by the slatted façade extending beyond the building’s edges, crafting an interplay of light, shadow, and movement that lends a kinetic energy to the composition.

Maximizing Views & Sunlight

One of the project’s key design principles is its engagement with the surroundings—both in terms of urban connectivity and natural advantages. The orientation optimizes sunlight penetration into interior spaces, ensuring that residents experience a light-filled, open atmosphere. The carefully designed terraces and projections allow for uninterrupted views over the evolving cityscape, fostering a deeper connection between the built environment and the urban panorama beyond.

Reimagining Collective Living

This project is more than just a residential structure—it is a statement on the evolution of collective housing. By balancing architectural coherence with innovation, it demonstrates how urban developments can preserve continuity while introducing elements of distinction.

Ar. Mário Alves’ latest intervention in Aveiro reflects a progressive yet sensitive approach to urban living—one that values the synergy between architectural heritage and modern aspirations. As the city continues to expand, projects like this define how contemporary design can honor the past while shaping the future.
